  • Because continuous data protection backs up data residing on file servers as it changes, open files are protected, and incremental or differential backups are not needed.
  • Integration with Symantec ThreatCon, a measurement of global threat exposure, allows Backup Exec users to view security threat reports and set proactive backup to be triggered when global threats reach or exceed a specified level.
  • Policies provide a simple, logical method for managing backup jobs and strategies. Policies contain job templates, which have job attributes that define how and when Backup Exec processes a job.
  • Automated alerts can be sent via Microsoft Exchange, Lotus Notes, SMTP email, pager, printer, net send broadcast, or network monitoring applications.
  • Configurable 128-bit and 256-bit encryption is available when data is being backed up or stored on tape.

Backup Exec 12.5 for Windows Servers provides continuous disk-based and traditional tape-based data protection. It can protect a single server, multiple servers, a storage area network, or a large enterprise.

At the core of the Backup Exec system is the Backup Exec Media Server. The media server controls the backup media (disk, network attached storage, or tape) and can back up data from servers running any of the following:

  • Windows 2000 Server
  • Windows Essential Business Server 2008
  • Windows Server 2003
  • Windows Server 2003 x64 Editions
  • Windows Server 2008
  • Windows Storage Server 2003
  • Windows XP
  • Windows XP Professional x64 Edition

The media server's administration console provides an intuitive interface and wizards to simplify installation, setup, backup, recovery, media management, disaster preparation, cluster installation, and agent configuration.

A Web-based search engine enables end users to retrieve previous versions of files stored on the file server from the Internet without contacting IT.

The version of Backup Exec available through PNGO PROGRAMME is the Not for Resale (NFR) version and includes all of the available agents and options that enhance and extend platform and feature support for Backup Exec. You do not need to purchase these items separately. These agents and options can be used to improve backup data integrity, reduce backup windows, and extend protection to desktops and laptops as well as to other servers (such as Microsoft Exchange Server, Microsoft SQL server, UNIX and Linux servers, and virtual environments like VMware and Microsoft Virtual Servers). An unlimited number of these agents can be used within your network, allowing for multiple instances of agents to protect several servers. For a list of all Backup Exec agents and options, see the Backup Exec product page.

Free support is available through the Backup Exec standard online support program, using Symantec online knowledge bases.
